ENERGY TRANSITION
IN ACTION

Scotland aims to reach net zero emissions by 2045, requiring a range of clean energy technologies to decarbonise Scotland and the wider UK economy. Decarbonising oil and gas installations is essential, as these currently generate emissions equivalent to nine million homes annually.

Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) is a leasing round, led by Crown Estate Scotland, for offshore wind projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions from oil and gas production and promoting innovation. Developers can apply for seabed rights to build two types of projects:

  • IN Projects: Small-scale, innovative projects under 100MW
  • TOG Projects: Projects connected directly to oil and gas infrastructure to electrify operations and reduce production-related carbon emissions.

INTOG supports the North Sea Transition Authority sector deal by addressing government and industry demand for emission reduction and innovation. A key target of the North Sea sector deal is to reduce carbon emissions from oil and gas assets up to 50% by 2030. Green Volt, combined with another floating offshore wind project, CENOS, has the potential to reduce carbon emissions from UK oil and gas by 15%.

Crown Estate Scotland has entered into an Option Agreement with Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn for the 560MW Green Volt INTOG project, which will help decarbonise North Sea oil and gas installations. Further information is available on the Crown Estate Scotland website.

With grid connection secured and the announcement in September 2024 of the project’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) award from UK Government, Green Volt is on track to become one of the world’s first, commercial scale floating windfarms.
