Over the past 12 months, over 1,000 children from communities along the proposed Green Volt cable corridor have taken part in a series of interactive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) and renewable energy activities.

Between May 2025 and June 2026, the Green Volt community engagement team visited 7 primary schools across Aberdeenshire, engaging with pupils aged between five and 12 years old through a hands-on programme focused on wind energy and sustainability.

The schools involved were Monquhitter, New Deer, Maud, Auchnagatt, Stuartfield, Mintlaw and Longside Primary schools. In total, more than 1,000 young people took part in the education and awareness campaign.

Introducing renewable energy through play

For Primary 1 and 2 pupils, sessions focused on understanding the concept of wind power through the pupils enjoying use of their very own Green Volt-branded windmills to take home.

This simple, creative activity introduced the idea of wind energy in an accessible way and helped spark curiosity about how renewable power is generated.

STEM learning in action

Pupils from Primary 3 to Primary 7 were introduced to the Green Volt project before taking part in a STEM challenge to design and build their own model wind turbines.

Working in teams, they selected blade designs, tested different configurations and evaluated performance to see which turbine could generate the most power. The activity encouraged teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking, while also giving pupils a practical insight into the engineering principles behind offshore wind technology.

Building understanding across local communities

As the world’s largest commercial-scale floating offshore wind project, Green Volt is committed to early and meaningful engagement with communities across Aberdeenshire. This includes communities along the proposed onshore cable corridor, where ongoing engagement helps build understanding of the project and its wider context.

A lasting impact

The school engagement programme forms part of Green Volt’s wider commitment to education and community engagement across the region. By creating opportunities for young people to explore renewable energy in a practical and engaging way, the project aims to build lasting connections with local communities while supporting an understanding of Scotland’s energy transition.

Through a combination of creativity, teamwork and hands-on STEM learning, the programme has given hundreds of children a memorable introduction to renewable energy and a clearer sense of the technologies that will help shape our energy transition.
