As part of ongoing ecological monitoring for the Green Volt project, from 12 May 2025, surveys will take place along sections of the River Ugie, as the river flows east towards Peterhead.
A team from Gavia Environmental will be conducting non-invasive otter surveys along sections of the river and adjacent waterbodies. To view the specific riverside survey locations, use the button below.
The otter survey involves walking along riverbanks (and occasionally entering waterbodies) to look for signs of otters, such as: droppings (spraints), footprints and feeding remains. No camera traps or other equipment will be used, other than trained professionals observing the riverbanks.
In addition to the otter survey, Gavia will also be carrying out breeding bird surveys. These are vital for understanding local biodiversity and ensuring conservation commitments are met.
