Empowering the future – Peterhead Academy visit

As part of the Green Volt project’s commitment to community engagement in Peterhead and the wider area, Teresa Dawson, Community Liaison and Claire Tindle, Energy Offtake Manager recently visited Peterhead Academy.

The secondary school supports the Shell Girls in Energy programme, an innovative educational initiative designed to introduce female students to the diverse opportunities within the energy sector. Through workshops, mentoring, and practical learning, the programme challenges stereotypes in the energy sector and encourages young women to consider a future in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Teresa and Claire were invited into the school on Monday 16th December to present their career stories in the energy sector first-hand to students. Teresa, shared her professional journey – explaining the challenges she has encountered, the progress she has witnessed, and the need for persistence and curiosity in tackling a rapidly evolving industry.

Claire, having previously worked in the oil and gas sector before transferring into renewables, provided an overview on the Green Volt project before then sharing her personal experiences – explaining to students the importance of creativity and adaptability in the working world, as well as encouraging students to embrace their unique strengths and ideas.

The visit featured lively discussions as well as interactive activities that allowed students to ask questions and explore their understanding of the energy sector. A practical workshop during the visit brought energy concepts to life, including power generation and transmission at an offshore windfarm. Students had the chance to engage in hands-on projects that illustrated the fundamentals of energy production and sustainability. These activities helped to demystify the industry and made it feel more accessible and relevant to their lives.
