Mailys Billet, Offshore Consenter

The application for consent under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 and the marine licence applications for the offshore elements of the Green Volt Offshore Windfarm development were submitted to the Marine Scotland Licensing Operations (MS-LOT) Team on 20th January 2023.

I’ve been working for Flotation Energy for a couple of months as Lead Consenter on our Green Volt Project, a floating offshore windfarm that aims to decarbonise oil and gas platforms by powering them with renewable energy.

Together with our partner, Vårgrønn we aim to generate renewable energy from new floating offshore wind farms, which will enable the electrification and decarbonisation of offshore oil and gas installations in the North Sea. Any excess power will be made available to benefit UK consumers.

A main part of my role involves overseeing the consenting applications and I work closely with our engineers and technical managers to ensure we complete all the environment and consenting activities for the project (wind farm and transmission assets / infrastructure).

With so much to consider it’s vital that we engage with all our stakeholders to ensure we deliver the best project outcomes for all parties. I really enjoy this, as I work with, and alongside our partners and our supply chain, as well as engaging with community groups and individuals to understand their views and aspirations for the project.

Every day brings new challenges and ideas and I love being part of a team that’s involved in so many important aspects of such a vast and exciting infrastructure project. When operational in 2027, Green Volt will make a significant contribution towards:

  • Leading the UK to net-zero by 2050, a The North Sea Transition Deal goal
  • Significant reduction of offshore emissions
  • The UK’s goal to reach net-zero by 2050
  • Catalysing a Scottish and UK supply chain for floating offshore wind
  • Providing power to the UK Grid

We recently submitted our applications for the offshore elements of the project, which covers components such as the windfarm array, the export cable to the operating Buzzard field, and the export cable to landfall, with two landfall corridor options currently under consideration.
